Kupala Night also known as St. John the Baptist’s Night - old slavic tradition connected with summer solstice, pagan festival of fire, love and fertility, assimilated by christanity, celebrated even nowadays. On this friday night thousands people in central and eastern Europe (e.g. Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Slovakia, Lithuania etc.) will gather together and dance, jump over the fireplaces, sing and have fun outside. As a memento of old slavic custom, girls will make girlands and let them flow with a river. Ages ago people believed that the girl who’s girland was drifting the longest will luckily get marry soon.
In my city - Poznań - every year on the Kupala Night people are making lanterns and let them fly with a wind. This year we’ll try to beat Guiness record in the biggest number of laterns. Up to date record belongs to Mexico City and it amount to 15,000.
